Eitthvað að frétta hjá Sunderland?
Flugið á mávunum á suðurströndinni er orðið hættulegt. Sunderland slátrað í framlengingu að viðstöddum rúmlega 17 þúsund vitnum. Það held ég að það þurfi enginn að velkjast í vöfum um að Gus Poyet er að gera fína hluti. Var svo sem aldeilis að því á síðasta tímabili líka þegar menn rúlluðu yfir deildina fyrir neðan. Sunderland menn geta þá hugsað um deildina í fjóra mánuði áður en þeir komi til leiks í enska bikarnum. Leikmenn Brighton aftur á móti bara búnir að bæta við allavega einum leik í viðbót. Peningur í kassann og þreyttari fætur fyrir vikið. En þreyttir fætur kvarta ekki yfir hærri launum!!!
Í The Sun segja þeir:
BRIGHTON kept their remarkable start to the season bubbling along by disposing of lacklustre Sunderland in the Carling Cup.
Craig Mackail-Smith headed in Alan Navarro's cross in the sixth minute of extra time as the Black Cats became the fourth Premier League side dumped out in a night of upsets.
Stephane Sessegnon had a sharp chance in the third minute to put Sunderland ahead when he pounced on a loose ball in the area but drilled his effort wide.
Brighton, looking slick and confident, soon replied and really should have taken the lead when Westwood spilled a long-range shot from Mackail-Smith.
The goal was gaping for the usually predatory Ashley Barnes but he skied his effort over the top.
Sunderland were struggling again when Craig Noone delivered a superb cross from the left, but nobody could apply a decisive touch in a crowded goalmouth.
The Black Cats began to take command around the half-hour mark.
David Vaughan fired over after cutting in from the right and Craig Gardner's tame header was easily repelled, but the visitors were having things much their own way - until Keiren Westwood came out of his goal in a failed attempt to claim Inigo Calderon's long cross.
Luckily for Sunderland, Mackail-Smithcould not get direction or power on the loose ball from nearly 20 yards out.
At the other end, Gardner's low cross from the right skidded through a crowded goalmouth without attracting a touch.
A minute after the break Brighton striker Barnes sped through the centre, chasing between two defenders to get onto Noone's pass only to fail with his finish again - Westwood grateful to claw away.
The goalkeeper was helpless three minutes later as Inigo Calderon provided Mackail-Smith with a clear run and the £2.5 million striker duly slipped his shot past the out-rushing Westwood - only to see it bounce to safety off the far post.
There was a further worry for the visitors when skipper Lee Cattermole came off to be replaced by Connor Wickham but it looked a tactical switch to cash in on Brighton losing centre back and captain Gordon Greer at half time.
There was a huge moment of controversy in the 64th minute when Calderon burst into the Sunderland area, swept past Westwood and then tumbled over the goalkeeper.
Referee Andy D'Urso waved away penalty appeals and booked the Brighton man instead - presumably for diving. The boos, inevitably, rang out.
Substitute Vincelot had coped admirably with Sunderland's attack as he slotted in alongside Dunk at the back.
But his enjoyment was short-lived as he was carried off in the 76th minute with a dislocated shoulder to be replaced by assistant manager Mauricio Taricco.
Ankergren made a fine save down at his near post to defy the dangerous Sessegnon and force the game into extra time.
